There are so many great books out there on plant-based diets, from cookbooks to books on nutrition. This list is not exhaustive, but I thought I would list some of my favorites.
Cookbooks
Bryant Terry
Bryant Terry is an activist and author. He has many cookbooks, all of which I have found fun to read and enjoyed the recipes.
Vegetable Kingdom, The Abundant World of Vegan Recipes
This cookbook has some truly amazing dishes and beautiful photographs that make you want to run out and buy the ingredients immediately. One of my favotes is the Hoppin Johns in peppers with a cashew cream, which I will be making again soon!
Angela Liddon
Angela’s website and cookbooks are full of easy to make and delicious recipes.
Oh She Glows
This cookbook has a bunch of fresh-tasting and wonderful recipes. Check out her Cream of Tomato Soup with Roasted Italian Chickpea Croutons, which is awesome on a cold day with a grilled cheese sandwich made with Miyoko’s Cheddar.
Isa Chandra Moskowitz
Isa’s website and cookbooks are some of my absolute favorites.
Isa Does It
The cover of this cookbook says it contains “Amazingly easy, wildly delicious vegan recipes for every day of the week”. I agree whole-heartedly. You need to try the Carrot Cake Pancakes for breakfast, the Chicky Tuna Salad Sandwiches for lunch, and the Chandra Malai Kofta for dinner! You will be glad you did!
Miyoko Schinner
Miyoko Schinner has really done so much to change the vegan/plant-based cheese market. You can see some of her amazing products at her Creamery website. A lot of plant-based people I talk to said that dairy was the thing that was the hardest to let go. I agree completely. And many people don’t make the jump because of dairy. Miyoko’s cookbooks are also wonderful.
The Homemade Vegan Pantry
This book is a must have for any plant-based/vegan chef. It has everything from condiments like ketchup and BBQ sauce, to yogurt, and butter. The vegan crab cakes are amazing. And the Unribs are one of our favorite meals. Reminds me, I haven’t made any in a while.
Joe Yonan
Joe Yonan is a food editor at the Washington Post and a most excellent chef.
Cool Beans
This is one of my absolute favorite cookbooks. I love beans, one of the healthiest and satisfying parts of a whole food, plant-based diet, and this cookbook has so many great recipes. The Lentil Crackers are super easy to make and amazing. The Orecchiette is more involved, but well worth the effort. My goal is to eventually make every recipe in this cookbook.
Nutrition
T. Colin Campbell
Dr. Campbell is most famous for his China Study, one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted.
The China Study – Revised and Expanded Edition
The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell II, details the results of the China Study, one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted. The study took place in England and China and showed many of the negative health effects of a diet high in animal protein and the benefits to health of a whole food/plant-based diet. The book is meticulously researched, and is a valuable resource to understand the benefits of a plant-based diet.
