See recipe card for quantities.
Jackfruit is often used as a meat substitute. It shreds nicely and has a nice stringy texture. Do be aware, jackfruit is low in protein, so sometimes I add in beans Soy Curls, tofu or tempeh to up the protein content.
Instructions
Heat the cast iron skillet over a medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the oil. Once the oil is shimmering, add the onions and cook until translucent and browned, about 5 to 10 minutes.
Add in the whole jackfruit cubes when the onions are done. Do not shred it yet!
Cook until the jackfruit is browned, about 5 minutes.
Add the BBQ sauce and the water to the pan.
Mix well, lower the heat, and cover the pan with a lid.
After about 30 minutes, the jackfruit will be cooked.
Take two forks and shred the jackfruit.
When shredded, you are ready to make your Sloppy Jacks!
Pretzel buns are great to serve with the Sloppy Jacks!
Substitutions
You can use a tortilla and eat this as a wrap.
If you want it to be gluten-free, use a gluten free bun or gluten-free tortilla.
Variations
Jalapenoes, red pepper flakes, or hot sauce to kick the Sloppy Jacks up a notch.
Use any regular burger fixings, like lettuce, tomato, or a good vegan cheese, like Miyoko’s or Violife cheddar.
Some coleslaw, sauerkraut, or why not both at the same time, will add an awesome crunch to Sloppy Jacks!
Equipment
This recipe is very simple equipment-wise. Use a cast iron skillet with a lid, and a spatula!
Storage
Place in an airtight container and place in the fridge for 3-4 days.
I have never tried freezing the Sloppy Jacks filling.

Sloppy Jacks
Equipment
- 1 cast iron skillet with lid
- 1 spatula
Ingredients
Instructions
- Chop the onion as finely as you wish. Sometimes I like bigger pieces of onion for a texture contrast, sometimes I want them to disappear.
- Heat up a frying pan on your stove over a medium high heat. When the pan is hot, add oil. Wait until the oil shimmers.
- Add onions and fry until translucent, about 5-10 minutes.
- Next add the jackfruit (without the brine if using canned jackfruit). Cook the jackfruit until it is slightly browned. If canned jackfruit, this can be about 5 minutes, if using frozen, it will take longer.
- Turn the heat down and add BBQ sauce and water.
- Cook for 30 minutes, covered.
- When done, remove from heat and shred the jackfruit. I typically use a couple of forks to tear it to shreds.
- Serve! It would be excellent on a bun with a vegan cole slaw or sauerkraut!
